- Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian said he will look into the possibility of increasing the Philippine Coast Guard's (PCG) subsistence allowance as PCG personnel currently receive only a P150 per day.
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has vowed to boost the Philippine Coast Guard’s (PCG) capabilities and operations as it continues to battle continuing tensions in the West Philippine Sea.
Gatchalian said he will look into the possibility of increasing the PCG’s subsistence allowance as PCG personnel currently receive only a P150 per day.
Compared to other uniformed personnel, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance PCG personnel receive only such a small amount of subsistence pay, while others get P350 per day.
The senator said increasing the amount would help maintain high morale among PCG members, considering the harassments and challenges they face while patrolling the West Philippine Sea.
“Even when faced with a challenging situation, what is important is to sustain the high morale of our Coast Guard personnel,” Gatchalian said at a recent Senate budget hearing on the PCG’s proposed 2026 budget.
“Let me express my appreciation, commendation, and full support to the PCG. Whenever you patrol the West Philippine Sea, not only do you risk your life, but you also assert our sovereignty,” the senator said.
Moreover, Gatchalian emphasized that the PCG’s mission extends beyond national borders.
“The PCG’s job is not only for the Philippines but also for ASEAN. Anything that happens in the West Philippine Sea affects the entire region, even North Asia,” he noted.
