DAVAO CITY – A college here assured the public that they have effectively and safely managed the chemical spill reported in one of its laboratory rooms at the main campus following the magnitude-7.4 earthquake on Oct. 10.
The San Pedro College said in an official statement over the weekend that after the earthquake, laboratory staff, disaster response personnel, and security teams acted swiftly to contain the situation and ensure the safety of everyone on the campus.
Upon confirmation of the spill, the SPC said the affected area was secured and cordoned off, while ventilation measures—including the opening of windows and doors—were implemented to dissipate any potentially harmful gases.
Recognizing the need for specialized handling, the SPC sought assistance from the Bureau of Fire Protection, which arrived at around 1 p.m. to conduct an assessment. Toxic materials were contained using proper absorbent agents by 4 p.m.
The BFP declared the laboratory safe from hazardous and poisonous contamination by 5 p.m.
SPC thanked the bureau for its quick response and its personnel for demonstrating calmness, competence, and commitment throughout the incident.
The institution explained that the report and photos sent by BFP-Davao to their national office were part of standard procedures, and that the BFP national office’s social media post was not meant to sensationalize the incident.
SPC emphasized that the situation was handled with professionalism, prudence, and strict adherence to safety standards, ensuring that no one was harmed or placed in danger.
After the quake, the college added that it continues to assess the structural integrity of all its buildings and facilities.
“The safety and well-being of our students and personnel remain our top priority.”
