A portion of South Maryland Parkway between Flamingo and Desert Inn roads in Las Vegas has officially been designated as the new Filipino Town.
This comes after Clark County commissioners approved the designation last April 15. Based on a report by the "Las Vegas Sun," it was 91-year-old Rozita Lee, a Filipina resident of Southern Nevada since 1979, who led the calls for recognition of the local Filipino community. A road sign for Filipino Town was unveiled during a special event at Boulevard Mall.
During the event, a preview of the soon-to-come Filipino American Museum was shown. It will be home to art, cultural artifacts, and some historical pieces. It is expected to open in about a month.
There is hope that the establishment of Filipino Town will allow Filipinos based in or traveling to Las Vegas to feel right at home once visiting the area. It also allows others to find interest in our heritage.
