The San Juan City government and the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) have sent financial aid amounting to P3 million to the province of Cebu following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that hit the province on Sept. 30.
San Juan City Mayor and LCP National President Francis Zamora went to the province on Saturday, Oct. 11, to personally hand over the checks to Cebu Gov. Pam Baricuatro and Mayor Mayel Martinez of Bogo City, where the epicenter of the quake was located.
Zamora said the Bogo City government received P1 million from San Juan City and another P1 million from the LCP.
He also handed a check for P1 million to Gov. Baricuatro, courtesy of San Juan City.
"The financial aid—P1 million each for the Province of Cebu and the City of Bogo—was sourced from the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund (LDRRMF) of San Juan City under City Ordinance No. 32, Series of 2025," Zamora said.
"The P2 million aid from the City of San Juan, authorized through City Ordinance No. 32, Series of 2025, aims to assist in the recovery and rebuilding of communities affected by the recent earthquake in Cebu. The initiative highlights San Juan City’s commitment to inter-LGU cooperation and compassion in times of disaster," he added.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Oct. 5 tally, the death toll from the tremor that struck northern Cebu has climbed to 71 while at least 559 others were injured.
The Cebu provincial government declared a state of calamity after thousands spent the night on the streets amid repeated aftershocks.
“San Juan City stands in solidarity with the people of Cebu as they rebuild from this calamity. This is a time for compassion, unity, and partnership among cities and provinces," Zamora said.
“Through both the City of San Juan and the League of Cities of the Philippines, we reaffirm our commitment to help our fellow local governments recover and rise again," he noted.
