The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Saturday, October 11, reported that 824 aftershocks were recorded following the magnitude 7.4 and 6.8 offshore earthquakes that struck Davao Oriental on October 10.
In its latest advisory, Phivolcs said 346 aftershocks were plotted, while 13 were felt by residents. Magnitudes ranged from 1.2 to 5.8, based on data from the Mati seismic station.
The strong earthquakes, described as a “doublet” event, caused significant shaking across Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and nearby provinces, prompting safety inspections and the temporary suspension of classes and government work in affected areas.
Meanwhile, Phivolcs reported ongoing seismic activity in Cebu following the magnitude 6.9 offshore earthquake on September 30.
As of the same monitoring period, 10,671 aftershocks were recorded from the Cebu quake, of which 1,863 were plotted and 45 were felt by residents.
Magnitudes ranged from 1.0 to 5.1, based on data from the Medellin, Cebu (MECP) seismic station.
Phivolcs said it continues to closely monitor both seismic sequences and reminded the public to stay alert for strong aftershocks and follow local authorities’ advisories.
