Close to 11,000 aftershocks have rattled parts of Cebu and nearby provinces following the magnitude 6.9 offshore quake last Sept. 30, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported Saturday, Oct. 11.
In its latest report, Phivolcs said that since the strong earthquake struck, a total of 10,914 aftershocks have been detected.
As of 3 p.m. on October 11, the agency said 1,886 aftershocks have been plotted, while 45 were felt in surrounding areas.
It added that recorded aftershocks ranged from magnitude 1.0 to 5.1, according to data from the Medellin, Cebu (MECP) Reference Station.
Phivolcs said the seismic activity is part of the natural adjustment process of the earth’s crust following the mainshock, which was tectonic in origin.
The magnitude 6.9 offshore quake on September 30 prompted local governments in Cebu and nearby provinces to inspect roads, bridges, and public facilities for possible damage.
Authorities also reviewed emergency protocols and preparedness plans to ensure communities are ready for future seismic events.
