The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a total of 792 aftershocks as of Saturday morning, October 11, following the powerful magnitude 7.4 and 6.8 earthquakes that struck offshore Davao Oriental on October 10.
Of the total aftershocks, 331 have been plotted, while 13 were felt by residents in nearby areas, according to Phivolcs’ 7 a.m. update.
The aftershocks ranged in magnitude from 1.2 to 5.8, indicating continued seismic activity linked to the doublet earthquake sequence detected by the agency’s reference station in Mati, Davao Oriental.
Phivolcs earlier said the quakes were tectonic in origin, caused by the movement of active faults in the region.
The magnitude 7.4 quake occurred offshore near Manay, Davao Oriental, and was followed by a magnitude 6.8 event — both classified as major earthquakes capable of triggering strong ground shaking and structural damage.
Government agencies, including the Department of Education (DepEd) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), are continuing their assessment of affected schools, homes, and infrastructure across Mindanao.
Local authorities have also reminded the public to remain alert for possible aftershocks and secondary hazards such as landslides in mountainous areas.
Phivolcs advised residents to stay away from damaged structures and follow updates from official channels for verified information on the ongoing seismic activity.
