Tacloban, Eastern Visayas suspend work, classes after Davao quake
TACLOBAN CITY – The city government here and other areas in Eastern Visayas ordered the suspension of classes on all levels and work in government offices starting Friday afternoon, following the magnitude-7.4 earthquake.
Mayor Alfred Romualdez issued Executive Order No. 2025-10-57 declaring class and work suspensions as a precautionary measure, although tsunami warnings have been terminated as of posting time.
Mayor Remedios Petilla of nearby Palo also issued a similar suspension.
Palo town hosts the Government Center where regional and provincial offices of government agencies are situated.
Romualdez directed all city government departments, in coordination with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and barangay officials, to undertake preemptive evacuations, heighten monitoring of coastal areas, and ensure timely dissemination of information to at-risk communities.
“This measure is being taken in the interest of public safety and to allow families to prepare and evacuate, if necessary,” Romualdez said.
The tremor, which occurred at 9:43 a.m., prompted the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology to issue a tsunami warning for the country’s eastern seaboard. (PNA)
