The Embassy of Spain in Manila, through its Cultural and Education Office and the Instituto Cervantes, has kicked off its monthlong celebration of the Spanish National Day this October, offering a diverse lineup of cultural activities open to the public. The program spans exhibits, films, lectures, and design events, each exploring centuries of intertwined Filipino and Spanish heritage.

Among the featured attractions is Mezcla: Interwoven Cultures and the Mantón de Manila, an exhibition presented in collaboration with the Ayala Museum. The show opens on Oct. 10 and runs until Feb. 22, 2026, examining the cultural exchange that shaped the iconic shawl known as the mantón de Manila.

Two other exhibitions remain open to visitors. Four Centuries of Spanish Engineering Overseas is a permanent installation at the Centro de Turismo in Intramuros that highlights Spain’s engineering legacy around the world. Meanwhile, the Ateneo Art Gallery continues to host A Synergy of Ventures: The Post-War Art Scene, commemorating the centennial of Spanish-Filipino artist Fernando Zóbel, also on view until February 2026.

Celebrated Spanish industrial designer Héctor Serrano, recipient of the 2024 Spanish National Design Award, will conduct a series of talks titled The Journey in Between. His lecture tour begins at De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde on Oct. 14, followed by the University of the Philippines Diliman on Oct. 15 and the University of Santo Tomas on Oct. 16. Serrano will also appear at Manila FAME on Oct. 17 and at the closing of Manila Design Week on Oct. 18, sharing insights from his 25-year career in design innovation.

Lola Elizalde, one of Spain’s leading scholars on Philippine studies, will hold three lectures examining Spanish colonial history and cross-cultural exchange. Her talks include Permeable Borders: Interactions between Population Groups in 19th-Century Philippines on Oct. 14 at Casa Azul in Intramuros; Modernizing an Old Empire? Controversies over the Introduction of a Reformist Policy in 19th-Century Philippines on Oct. 15 at the Centro de Turismo; and Leisurely Legacies: Social Histories of Recreation in the Spanish Philippines on Oct. 16 at UP Diliman.

The celebration continues with Pelikula, the annual Spanish film festival showcasing works from Spain and Latin America. Running from Oct. 10 to 16, this year’s edition includes short films by young Filipino filmmakers—one notably in the Philippine creole chabacano, underscoring the enduring linguistic ties between Spain and the Philippines.

Complementing the film festival is the 7th Jornadas de ELE Manila, set for Oct. 24 and 25 at the University of Santo Tomas. The conference focuses on teaching methodologies for Spanish as a foreign language, covering lesson planning, content sequencing, and didactic resources. Organized by Ateneo de Manila University, UP Diliman, and UST in partnership with the Education Office of the Embassy of Spain and Instituto Cervantes, the event aims to strengthen Spanish language education in the Philippines.

Throughout October, Spain’s National Day celebrations offer Filipinos a window into centuries of shared history, art, and creativity—bridging cultures through the universal language of design, film, and education.
