The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday, Oct. 10, vowed to continue assisting the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the inspection of flood control projects across the country.
Acting PNP Chief Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said there are sufficient manpower and resources to sustain the support without compromising other law enforcement duties in coordination with the DPWH.
“The Philippine National Police will stick to its commitment to extend all the necessary support to the ongoing investigation into the anomalies involving government funds. We have been helping in the conduct of the inspections and in securing pieces of evidence in response to DPWH requests,” he said.
He likewise emphasized that the PNP’s role is focused on providing support and ensuring security during the validation, and not on conducting investigations unless directed by proper authorities.
“The PNP remains a reliable partner in promoting integrity and transparency in public service. As protectors of peace and order, we will always be ready to lend our strength in the pursuit of good governance,” Nartatez said.
The DPWH earlier disclosed that of the 8,000 flood control projects initially inspected nationwide, 421 were identified as “ghost projects.”
The inspections are being jointly conducted by the DWPH, PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev).
