The Philippine National Police (PNP) placed all police units in Davao (Region 11) and Caraga (Region 13) on full alert following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that occured off the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental on Friday, Oct. 10.
PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño said the Davao Police Regional Office (PRO-11) and Caraga Police Regional Office (PRO-13) recorded Intensity 5 shaking in Davao City and parts of Caraga, while Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Norte experienced Intensity 4.
“Automatic sa lahat ng apektadong lugar, particularly sa Region 11 at Region 13, ay naka full alert na po ang ating mga kapulisan (All police units in affected areas, particularly in Region 11 and Region 13, have been automatically placed on full alert),” he said in a news briefing at Camp Crame in Quezon City.
In Davao Region, Tuaño said property damage was reported in Panabo City Police Station where a water tank collapsed, and at Talaingod Municipal Police Station in Davao del Norte where a perimeter fence was damaged. Power interruptions were also reported in Davao Occidental, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and Davao del Sur.
Meanwhile, classes were suspended across Davao Region as part of precautionary measures. The PRO-11 also activated “Oplan Kalsada” to assist commuters and maintain road safety. Police units deployed their drones to assess damage in affected areas.
“Mayroon silang ipinapatupad ngayon na libreng sakay sa PRO-11 para matulungan ang ating mga kababayan (The PRO-11 is implementing a free ride program to assist our fellow citizens),” Tuaño added.
In Caraga, the Magsaysay Bridge in Butuan City was reported impassable due to structural damage, and some areas experienced power interruptions. Despite this, roads in most quake-affected areas remain passable.
Tuaño said police personnel are ready to provide security in evacuation centers and assist in rescue and relief operations.
The PNP also reinforced its coordination with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and echoed the agency’s advisory for residents in coastal areas of Eastern Samar, Southern Samar, Leyte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Davao Oriental to evacuate immediately due to the tsunami warning.
