Maguindanao, Cotabato LGUs cancel classes after massive quake

COTABATO CITY – Dozens of students in Kidapawan City and Tupi, South Cotabato collapsed or experienced anxiety attacks following the magnitude-7.4 earthquake that struck the Davao region on Friday, prompting local governments to immediately suspend classes.
Maguindanao del Sur Gov. Datu Ali Midtimbang ordered the suspension of classes on all levels, public and private, across the province, where the tremor was felt at Intensity III.
Midtimbang directed all municipal disaster councils to conduct continuous Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDANA) on all school buildings and government offices.
In Kidapawan City, Mayor Paolo Evangelista confirmed that no casualties were reported from the tremor, which was felt at Intensity V, except for some students who experienced dizziness and anxiety.
“No reported physical injuries in the city,” Evangelista said on the city’s social media page.
He added that initial reports showed no structural damage to school buildings, but RDANA is being conducted on all concrete structures.
Similarly, in Tupi, South Cotabato, the local government suspended classes after about 25 students of Tupi National High School were rushed to the hospital after experiencing dizziness and nausea.
Cotabato City Mayor Bruce Matabalao ordered the suspension on classes on all levels.
“This is to ensure the safety and welfare of students, teachers, and school personnel given the possibility of aftershocks,” he said. (PNA)
