Magnitude 7.4 earthquake rocks Davao Oriental, nearby provinces on Oct. 10
Phivolcs revises initial magnitude of 7.6
A powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 7.4 on the Richter scale struck Davao Oriental at 9:43 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
It was initially reported as magnitude 7.6 before Phivolcs revised it to 7.5 then 7.4
Phivolcs said the quake’s epicenter was located 43 kilometers northeast of Manay, Davao Oriental, at a shallow depth of 23 kilometers.
In its Earthquake Information No. 3, Phivolcs reported the following intensities across affected areas:
Intensity V (strong) – Compostela, Maco, Mawab, Monkayo, Montevista, Nabunturan, and Pantukan (Davao de Oro); Asuncion, Braulio E. Dujali, Carmen, New Corella, City of Panabo, Island Garden City of Samal, Santo Tomas, and City of Tagum (Davao del Norte); City of Davao (Davao del Sur); Jose Abad Santos (Davao Occidental); Cateel and City of Mati (Davao Oriental); City of Kidapawan (Cotabato); Alabel, Glan, and Malungon (Sarangani); City of Koronadal, Tampakan, Tupi, and City of General Santos City (South Cotabato); City of Butuan (Agusan del Norte); and Claver, Gigaquit, and Mainit (Surigao del Norte).

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
The agency warned of possible damage and aftershocks.
This earthquake comes just over a week after Cebu province experienced a magnitude 6.9 tremor on Sept. 30, which killed 72 people, displaced more than 20,000 residents, and caused widespread infrastructure damage.
