The House of Representatives elected several of its members to plum posts during plenary session Friday, Oct. 10, including a new deputy speaker.
Majority Leader Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos made the successive motions to elect the members, while the presiding officer, Deputy Speaker Ilocos Sur 2nd district Rep. Kristine Singson-Meehan these motions after hearing no objections.
Installed as new deputy speaker was South Cotabato 2nd district Rep. Ferdinand Hernandez. Hernandez did not replace anybody from the previous 10 deputy speakers elected in current 20th Congress.
The Mindanaoan is the first deputy speaker to be elected under the Speakership of Isabela 6th district Rep. Faustino "Bojie" Dy III.
Dy ascended to the top post in the House only last Sept. 17, when he replaced Speaker Martin Romualdez of Leyte’s 1st district.
Meanwhile, House "Young Guns" stalwart Lanao del Sur 1st district Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong was designated chairman of the Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms.
Before this, Marcos removed the deputy majority leader title from Adiong, so that the latter may be allowed to hold a panel chairmanship.
Afterward, along with his new chairmanship, Adiong was also named assistant majority leader. With this, he remains part of the powerul Committee on Rules that's chaired by Marcos.
Meanwhile, Marcos also nominated Galing sa Puso Party-list Rep. Jan "JP" Padiernos to the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET).
