Two high-ranking House of Representatives members have assured the public that assistance from the legislative chamber for the victims of the earthquake in the Davao region Friday, Oct. 10 is forthcoming.
Giving statements to this effect were Deputy Speakers Ilocos Sur 2nd district Rep. Kristine Singson-Meehan and Antipolo City 1st district Rep. Ronaldo "Ronnie" Puno.
Both Singson-Meehan and Puno offered their commiserations to those affected by the Davao tremblor as well as another strong earthquake that struck Cebu last Sept. 30.
"We are here in support for those affected. And of course, kami dito sa Congress, we'll do our best also to find ways paano mapabilis ang tulong para sa mga na-lindol (we here in Congress, we'll do our best also to find ways to expedite assistance to the earthquake victims)," Singson-Meehan said in a chance interview Friday.
In a separate interview Friday, Puno proudly said that House members are now more proactive when it comes to pooling resources for the purpose of helping a calamity-stricken area.
"The good thing about Congress ngayon, hindi na kami naghihintay eh na kakalabitin pa kami, para 'Hoy tumulong kayo dito.' Hindi, nangunguna talaga eh (The good thing about Congress nowadays, who don't need to be told anymore by others anymore, 'Hey, send some help there.' No, they're taking the lead)," he said.
"Alam mo natutuwa ako kasi especially sa partido ko na talagang reaching out sila nung nakita nila na may disaster na ganun (You know I'm really happy especially with my party, when they saw there was a disaster, they really reached out)."
Puno said he witnessed thia in case of Cebu, while was hit by a magnitude 6.9 earthquake last Sept. 30.
"Hindi na kailangang mag-usap usap pa dyan eh. Kasi even kami lang sa partido lang namin, nung nag-earthquake sa Cebu, nagtulong-tulong kami para makadagdag kami sa dinadalang tulong ni [Cebu 4th district] Congressman Sun Shimura who was a member of NUP."
(There's no more need to discuss it. When Cebu was struck by an earthquake, our party pooled assistance together to add to those being delivered by Congressman Sun Shimura who was a member of NUP.)
Regarding the Davao Occidental earthquake, Puno believes that House members from the region are already cooperating with each other.
A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck waters off the coast of Davao Occidental on Friday morning.
