CEBU CITY – The powerful earthquake that struck Mindanao sent Metro Cebu to a screeching halt on Friday, Oct. 10.
The magnitude-7.4 quake, whose epicenter was located 62 kilometers east of Manay town, Davao Oriental province, forced several local government units (LGUs) in Cebu province to suspend classes and government work.
Fortunately, the tremor did not cause major damage.
Workers, especially those in high-rise buildings, were instructed to evacuate. They stayed in an open area and were only allowed to return to their workstations after a thorough inspection.
Work at Cebu City Hall and its satellite offices were suspended after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued advisories about potential aftershocks.
“The decision was made after consultations with the Cebu City Council and the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CCDRRMO) to ensure the safety of all employees,” Mayor Nestor Archival said.
The city’s disaster personnel were placed on heightened alert to ensure quick response in case of emergency, Archival said.
Classes from daycare to high school in Cebu City were suspended until further notice due to the magnitude-6.9 earthquake that struck northern Cebu on Sept. 30.
In Mandaue City, Mayor Jonkie Ouano ordered the suspension of all face-to-face classes in public and private schools.
Government operations in the city continued but only with a skeletal workforce.
Mayor Samsam Gullas of Talisay City cancelled classes on all levels.
Other areas in Cebu that suspended classes were first district (Sibonga, Minglanilla, Carcar City, Naga City, and San Fernando), second district (Argao, Santander, Dalaguete, Samboan, and Boljoon), third district (Barili, Tuburan, and Aloguinsan), fourth District (Bogo City, San Remigio, Daanbantayan, Bantayan, and Medellin), fifth district (Poro, Compostela, Carmen, Sogod, Catmon, Borbon, Liloan, and Danao City), sixth district (Consolacion and Cordova), and seventh district (Alegria, Alcantara, Dumanjug, Malabuyoc, Moalboal, Ronda, and Ginatilan).
