Butuan City suspends work, classes, mobilizes disaster teams after 7.4-tremor

BUTUAN CITY – Butuan City and neighboring areas suspended classes on all levels and work, both government and private, following the magnitude-7.4 earthquake in the Davao region Friday, Oct. 10.

“To give way to the conduct of rapid damage assessment of infrastructures and facilities, classes on all levels, public and private, are hereby suspended immediately and will wait for further development,” Butuan City Mayor Lawrence Fortun said as he inspected here for damages.

Along with the disaster personnel and rescue teams and city engineers, Fortun visited injured individuals.

Some government offices and private establishments were given the discretion to suspend work or work from home, especially those in the medical profession.

The tremor was strongly felt in the Caraga region, particularly in this capital city.

Hospital patients were temporarily evacuated.

The seventy-year-old Magsaysay Bridge was temporarily closed to traffic due to minor cracks. School buildings in Agusan del Sur, particularly in the towns of Prosperidad and Sibagat, also sustained minor cracks.

Police Major Jennifer S. Ometer, Regional Public Information Office Police Regional Office 13 chief, said they have deployed disaster teams in every police offices to assist local government unit Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils.

The Southern Mindanao and Northeastern Mindanao Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils are closely monitoring the situation.
