A lot of Filipinos may be losing trust in government offciials, but that's no reason to give up.
This was among the takeaways from Parañaque City 2nd district Rep. Brian Raymund Yamsuan's message during his recent celebration of his first 100 days in office.
Yamsuan, a former Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary, couldn't help allude to the people's outrage over the massive corruption involving anomalous or "ghost" flood control projects.
Whether fairly or unfairly, lawmakers like himself have become central figures in the controversy.
“Alam natin na sa panahon ngayon, maraming hamon sa ating gobyerno. Mayroong mga isyung lumalabas, may mga taong nawawalan ng tiwala. Sa gitna ng lahat ng ito, nakatuon lang tayo at tuloy-tuloy sa ating mga gawain para mapagaan ang buhay ng mga kababayan natin,” Yamsuan said.
(We know that in these times, our government faces many challenges. Issues are emerging, and some people are losing trust. Amid all this, we remain focused and continue with our work to ease the lives of our fellow citizens.)
Yamsuan, who entered the 20th Congress last June 30 as a first-time district congressman, enjoined his colleagues to simply stick to the virtues of "kindness and compassion".
“If we always choose kindness and compassion, we can accomplish much more to help our fellow Filipinos elevate the quality of their lives, starting in our own districts,” he added.
In the House of Representatives, Yamsuan has focused on quality over quantity in filing bills relevant to realizing his HOPE agenda. His HOPE branding stands for Health, Opportunities and jobs, Peace and order, and Education.
In his first 100 days, Yamsuan has proposed over 30 bills which aim to, among others, provide free annual medical check-ups for all Filipinos, and grant stipends and free school supplies to students, especially those enrolled in public schools.
To strengthen the government’s peace and order programs, Yamsuan has filed measures which seek to modernize the crime investigation techniques of law enforcers and mandate the installation of CCTVs in commercial establishments.
Yamsuan has also asked Congress to pass laws that would institutionalize the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)’s Integrated Livelihood Program to fulfill his twin goals of promoting entrepreneurship and opening opportunities for Filipinos to improve their lives.
Yamsuan brought the SLP, rebranded as the Dagdag Puhunan; and the Government Internship Program, repackaged as the Jobs and Uptraining for the Modern Pinoy (JUMP), to his district.
He has also facilitated the grant of DOLE’s emergency employment program, the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) to 1,100 beneficiaries during his first 100 days in office.
Yamsuan’s Bigay Negosyo or the DILP has yielded 742 beneficiaries of food carts and rice reselling packages in his first 100 days.
