The City Government of Navotas will extend financial assistance to the province of Cebu to help speed up relief and recovery efforts following the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck several towns on Sept. 30.
The LGU has allocated P1 million from its 2025 Quick Response Fund to support ongoing emergency operations in the province, particularly in areas that suffered severe damage.
“Our city’s budget and resources may not be that much; however, we are still fortunate that we have the capacity to help our fellow Filipinos in dire need of support and assistance,” Mayor John Rey Tiangco said in a statement on Thursday, Oct. 9.
“Pinagdaanan na rin natin ito. Noong nakaraang Hulyo, itinaas din ang state of calamity sa ating lungsod at alam natin kung gaano kahirap ang ganitong sitwasyon. Kaya hanggang may maitutulong tayo sa mga kababayan nating nangangailangan, gagawin natin (We have been through this too. Last July, the state of calamity was also lifted in our city and we know how difficult this situation is. So, as long as we can help our countrymen in need, we will do so),” he added.
The city government has a long record of providing assistance to disaster-stricken communities across the country. In 2019, the city donated P500,000 to Tulunan, Cotabato, after a series of earthquakes hit the area.
It also sent P2 million to the typhoon-ravaged municipalities of Lawaan and Giporlos, Eastern Samar, in 2014, and P1.5 million to various areas affected by Typhoon Odette in 2022, including Dapa (Surigao del Norte), Ilog (Negros Occidental), Gingoog (Misamis Oriental), and the provinces of Dinagat Islands and Bohol.
During the Taal Volcano eruption in 2020, Navotas also distributed in-kind donations such as 1,600 hygiene kits, P300,000 worth of medicines, and 300 sacks of rice to evacuees in Batangas City and Trece Martires, Cavite.
Mayor Tiangco emphasized that Navotas’ gesture of solidarity is rooted in empathy and shared experience.
“Alam natin ang pakiramdam ng mawalan at masalanta, kaya’t hindi tayo magdadalawang-isip na tumulong sa ating mga kababayan (We know the feeling of loss and devastation, so we will not hesitate to help our countrymen),” he said.
