A total of 54 Manila City Jail Female Dormitory (MCJFD) persons deprived of liberty (PDL) graduated under the alternative learning system (ALS), the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said.
In a statement, the BJMP said 29 of the PDLS completed the elementary while 25 others graduated from junior high school.
“This milestone stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the PDL to continue their pursuit of education despite challenges,’’ the MCJFD noted.
The MCJFD pointed out that the graduation rites was even more memorable with the families of the graduates joining them in the celebration in the company of the ALS teachers, whose guidance and encouragement played a vital role in their success.
Guest speaker Dr. Nerissa Roxas-Lomeda, officer-in-charge (OIC) Schools Division of Manila Superintendent emphasized to the PDLs and their families the importance of continuous learning and rehabilitation.
More support was provided to the MCJFD with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) officially launching the first-ever Pag-asa Expo: Serbisyo at Katarungan Caravan for PDL, bringing vital government services directly to the MCJFD.
Through the initiative, 50 female PDLs received skills training, livelihood support under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD), psychosocial counseling, legal aid and Balik Probinsya assistance.
The program highlighted the collaboration between DILG and BJMP to ensure services reach the most vulnerable.
With 5,000 hygiene kits distributed across the jail population, the Pag-asa Expo demonstrates that even behind walls, hope, care, and opportunities for growth are possible.
