Filipino furniture designer Deya Tsyna emerges as the grand winner of Fashion Aid Philippines and DTI Malikhaing Pinoy's The Grant

Each island of the Philippines has something unique to offer. Whether it’s food, design, or performance, these cultural gems make the country's heritage ever vibrant—and that’s all thanks to the Filipino creatives who push them forward. It’s an understatement to say that the Philippines is teeming with modern visionaries. The challenge today is finding them and giving them the proper support to help both them and their craft thrive.
That’s where The Grant steps in. An initiative led by Fashion Aid Philippines and DTI Malikhaing Pinoy, the platform is designed to discover and elevate Filipino creatives in fashion, accessories, and living through a competition. After its launch last March, it gathered finalists who underwent mentoring sessions to help their innovative works push the boundaries of design while honoring the craft, culture, and stories that shape the Philippines.

On Oct. 2, 2025, at the Centro de Turismo Intramuros in Manila City, The Grant’s inaugural search came to an end, with the finalists showcasing their works. Out of the 20 finalists, furniture designer Deya Tsyna emerged as the grand champion with a piece that mirrors the heritage of her hometown in Bohol and the story of the Filipino people.
In an interview with Manila Bulletin Lifestyle, Deya looks back on her early beginnings in design, her journey through The Grant, and shares details about her winning piece — the “Dioleta” accent chair.
Hi, Deya! First of all, what inspired you to pursue a career in furniture design? Is it a passion that runs in the family?
Yes, creativity definitely runs in the family. My sister Zuh Dai is a visual artist, my younger sister also loves to draw, and my mom is an interior designer — so I grew up surrounded by creativity in many forms.
Back in 2024, I joined a competition called Obra Masterclass out of pure curiosity. I had no background in furniture design at the time; I just wanted to try. It was my first time creating a furniture piece, and to my surprise, it became a Best in Lighting nominee. That moment opened my eyes to the world of design and made me realize that this was something I truly wanted to pursue.
Later on, I created my second piece, the Amara Bench, where I had the honor of representing the Philippines and winning the ASEAN Furniture Design Award Popular Vote (Asia) in April 2025.
Now, with The Grant, I’m reminded that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be — continuing the path that began with simple curiosity and has now grown into a true passion.
Did your hometown in Bohol play a role or influence you in this creative path?
My hometown, Bohol, has always been at the heart of my creative journey. When I started designing my first chair, I went back home to reconnect with my roots and find inspiration there.

How did you hone your craft? Did you undergo any formal training?
I started with Obra Masterclass, where I was mentored by Vito Selma, one of the designers I’ve always admired. Later on, I was also mentored by Vanessa Gaston and Jed Yabut — both of whom deeply inspired me with their passion and dedication to design. Learning from them helped me develop my own creative voice and a deeper appreciation for craftsmanship.
Let’s talk about your journey in The Grant 2025. What encouraged you to join?
I’ve always loved joining competitions because they give me a platform to showcase my work — especially since I’m not from Manila, where most opportunities are centered. Competitions like The Grant allow designers like me to share our stories and culture with a wider audience. Beyond that, the best part is always meeting new friends and fellow creatives who inspire me and whom I hope to collaborate with one day.
What was the experience like? What was the most memorable and most challenging part?
The most challenging part was definitely the design process itself. I’m still new to the furniture industry — “Dioleta” is only the third furniture piece I’ve made since I started in 2024. Manufacturing it for the first time was not easy, but it taught me so much. I feel blessed and grateful that the piece was recognized, and even more grateful to the people who believed in my vision and helped make it possible.

Can you tell us the story behind your winning piece, the “Dioleta” accent chair?
“Dioleta” was inspired by the Visayan word padayon, which means “to keep going” or “to continue.” Its infinite form symbolizes resilience — a reminder to move forward despite challenges and to hold on to the faith that tomorrow is always worth striving for.
I named it “Dioleta” as a reflection of the journey—the growth, struggles, and grace that came with creating it.
Did you collaborate with a community in creating it? What materials and techniques did you use?
Yes, this piece was handcrafted by Boholanos. A huge part of its success came from the help of my family, especially my mom, and the support of Antequera basket weavers and local craftsmen. Their skill and dedication brought the piece to life. It’s woven with abaca, highlighting the beauty and strength of natural Filipino materials.

What lessons have you learned as a furniture designer, and what advice would you give to anyone who wants to pursue the same path?
It’s scary at first. There will be times of doubt and people who question your path. But there will also be people who believe in you — and that makes all the difference.
My advice is to trust the process. Every challenge teaches you something important. Enjoy the journey, cherish the people you meet, and keep creating from the heart. Always be inspired by where you came from, stay true to your roots, and be as authentic as possible—because that’s what will set your work apart.
