A student riding a motorcycle was injured after being chased and rammed by a car he allegedly sideswiped in Teresa, Rizal, on Tuesday, Oct. 7.
The 15-year-old student was seen on closed-circuit television (CCTV) riding without a helmet, being chased by the driver, who suddenly hit his motorcycle, causing him to fall and roll on the ground.
Prior to the chase, the driver claimed that the student had sideswiped and scratched his vehicle, prompting him to pursue the student when he refused to stop.
Personnel from the Teresa Municipal Police Station said that based on CCTV footage, the driver intentionally hit the student’s motorcycle to force him to stop.
Authorities said that the student stated that he was scared, which prompted him to flee.
The driver has reportedly apologized to the victim and his family and said he would assist with his medical expenses and the repair of the damaged motorcycle.
Authorities said the driver could face an attempted homicide case if the student’s family decides to press charges.
Meanwhile, authorities reminded parents that it is prohibited for minors to ride motorcycles after finding out that the student did not have a license to drive.
On Wednesday morning, Oct. 8, Acting Transportation Sec. Giovanni Lopez has ordered the cancellation of the car driver’s license following the directive of the President to hold irresponsible drivers accountable for endangering the lives of road users.
Lopez immediately instructed the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to locate the driver and impose a lifetime revocation of his license.
“‘Yang driver na ‘yan, walang karapatan magmaneho sa kalsada. Sabihin na nating totoo mang nasagi ‘yung kanyang sasakyan. Tama bang habulin at bundulin mo ‘yung bata? (That driver has no right to be on the road. Even if it’s true that his car was scratched, does that justify chasing and ramming the student?),” Lopez stated.
“No amount of explanation can justify his actions. Mas may edad siya eh, dapat alam niya kung ano ang tama (He’s older, he should know what is right),” he added.
Meanwhile, the LTO is set to issue a show cause order against the driver today.
