De La Salle big man Mason Amos drew loud reactions from his former school’s supporters when his name was announced during their game against Ateneo over the weekend.
But instead of letting out a loud response or turning emotional, the 21-year-old player knew moving forward would do him no harm as he copes up with a new environment.
“I mean, there's really nothing to comment about it. That's how they feel and that's gonna be how they feel for the rest of the season. I'm just gonna keep moving forward,” said Amos after La Salle’s 81-74 defeat to archrival Ateneo.
“I had a bad game but we all have bad games and I'm just gonna keep improving from here,” he added.
Amos had a poor-shooting output against the Katipunan-based squad, listing only six points on a 2-of-7 shooting which went along with two rebounds, two assists, and one steal in 25 minutes of action.
“I'm just gonna be straight honest. We really played really bad and it's a bit obvious. You guys saw what happened in the first half,” continued Amos, who joined Ateneo's hymn moments after the game.
“Time wasn't on our side even though we made a big run but we can't keep relying on that stuff to happen,” he added. ”We take full responsibility for this, not the coaches, the players [and] we didn't play how we usually play and there's no excuses for this game.”
The Archers regained their groove in the latter part of the game and turned a 31-point deficit to a five-point margin, 72-77. Unfortunately, the Eagles were just too poised in the endgame to preserve the victory.
“I mean, just trying to be mentally tough, you know, just being there for my teammates because my team needs me also,” said Amos. “So, I mean, just being myself and being true to myself.”
Captain Mike Phillips praised his teammate especially after showing up despite the adversity.
“Grabe talaga yung ginawa niya, you know, not a lot of people would do that. Very, very bold and what do you call this, he's just a very strong person,” said Phillips.
“And behind the scenes, behind basketball, he's just one of my, you know, closest people and one of the closest people,” he added.
La Salle, which holds a 2-2 win-loss card, shoots for a rebound win when it takes on National University on Sunday, Oct. 12, at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila.
