DAVAO CITY – Davao City first district Rep. Paolo Duterte criticized on Tuesday, Oct. 7, the appointment of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla as the new Ombudsman, calling it a move that undermines the integrity of the Constitution and serves the interests of those in power.
“It makes sense… With all the problems faced by those in power right now, they need all the help they can get to cover themselves up — even at the cost of making a mockery of our Constitution. God bless the Philippines!” Rep. Duterte said in the Filipino language.
The strong remark comes as critics raise concerns about possible conflicts of interest and questions about the independence of the Office of the Ombudsman—an institution tasked with investigating and prosecuting government corruption.
Rep. Duterte, the eldest son of former President Rodrigo Duterte, has been vocal about governance and accountability. His latest statement raised concerns over whether Remulla’s appointment upholds transparency and the Constitution’s system of checks and balances.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced the appointment of Remulla as the new Ombudsman on Tuesday following the retirement of Ombudsman Samuel Martires in July.
Remulla’s new role has stirred debate within political and legal circles, with opposition lawmakers and rights advocates warning that his close ties to the current administration could compromise the impartiality of the anti-corruption office.
