Cagayan Gov. Edgar Aglipay and the local government unit of Alcala is coordinating with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Region 2 for the reconstruction of the Piggatan Bridge that collapsed on Monday afternoon reportedly due to overloaded trucks.
Aglipay ordered an investigation and ordered the Cagayan police to coordinate and come up with a rerouting plan.
Four trucks with an estimated weight of 50 tons fell along the bridge and seven people, including drivers and passengers, were injured.
No fatalities were recorded.
On Tuesday, Aglipay met Alcala Mayor Tin Antonio, DPWH Assistant Regional Director Rona Ubiña, PDRRMO head Cesar Cuntapay, and provincial government officials over the bridge.
The provincial government is investigating the incident.
Aglipay conducted an inspection of the decades-old structure on Monday night.
Authorities are investigating if the collapse was the result of four overloaded trucks simultaneously passing over the bridge.
They were reportedly loaded with agricultural products.
The DPWH-Cagayan 1st Engineering District vowed to fast-track bridge repair and coordinate with the provincial and local governments for mitigating measures.
Antonio said the bridge is 45-years-old. It is the oldest in the town and has an 18-ton load limit.
Trucks and other vehicles pass the bridge to northern Cagayan and Ilocos Norte.
