More than 1200 Filipino students excelled in the 2025 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) held online on Aug. 9.
Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG) head Dr. Simon Chua said the contingent did not just duplicate, but improved on the Filipino math aces' impressive showing in the 2024 edition of the contest. Last year, 723 students were among the AMC top scorers.
"This year, seven students got Prize Awards which are given to the Top 1 percent of their year level, while 39 obtained High Distinction Awards for being in the top 3 percent of their year level. Another 234 students received Distinction Awards, given to those in the top 20 percent of their year level. 466 others got Credit Awards for being in the Top 55 percent of the primary division and Top 60 percent of the secondary division. On the other hand, 467 others were given Proficiency Certificates for demonstrating competence in math problem solving," Chua said.
He added that the Canberra-based Australian Maths Trust (AMT) has been holding the AMC since 1978. More than 53,000 students worldwide took part in this year's competition.
The MTG named the Prize awardees as Jenelle Nyka Lee (Chiang Kai Shek College); Jhomson Jencen Chua (Makati Hope Christian School; Theo Chan (MGC New Life Christian Academy); Annette Tiffany Yu (St. John's Institute); Ethan Caleb Choy (Phil. Science High School-Main); Shaun Lawrence Poh Leung (St. Stephen's High School), and Jerome Austin Te (Jubilee Christian Academy).
The High Distinction awardees are Cyris Chad Manarang, Thea Paulyn Garcia, Wylexi Gianine Ng, Lance Christian Ty, Lucian Niccolo Datu, Elijah Leondre Paloy, Ava Sofia Carlos, Adrian Jeric Ang, Beatrice Sarah Yu, Marcus Jacob Vidallo, Alistair Ivan Siahingco, Harold Theodore Lorenzo, Andrea Gabrielle Braganza, Elizur Daniel Anabieza, Alyssa Grace Ng, Nathan Gohoc, Erin Leighton Go, Leonard Vash Cay, Byron Alden Tam, Yujoon Shin, Heal Job Esio, Samuel Alarcon, Mishael Oikos Chan, Anton J Elumbaring, Ashton Grant Yang, Carsten Edmund Ang, Marcus Jefferson Lee, Kate Marie Aquino, Robert Henrik Uy, Jacob Trevor Kaw, Jeremiah Emmanuel Lubiano, Juan Antonio Siayngco, Jared Adriel Aguirre, Adrienne Co, Josh Evan David Disu, Justine Aaron Co, Kate Dominique Siaco, Travin Rain Cheng, and Luiz Miguel Doligosa.

The AMC contest paper consists of 30 multiple choice questions ordered in increasing difficulty and covers basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, fractions, ratios, statistics and problem solving, with Chua reffering to AMC as "one of the biggest and most challenging math challenges in the world."
Chua recalled that so far, at least 17 MTG-trained students have aced the competition by garnering perfect scores in the event.
"They received the Peter O'Halloran Award, named in honor of AMT's founding executive director," he added.
