Inactive Super Junior member Sungmin says malicious rumors spread after he got married

Sungmin, who is an inactive member of K-pop boy band Super Junior, said malicious rumors spread after he got married. 

Sungmin and musical actress Kim Sa-eun got married on Dec. 13, 2014. His relationship with Kim Sa-eun and the marriage announcement became issues among Super Junior fans in South Korea. 

Since then, Sungmin has become inactive as a member in Super Junior and debuted as a trot singer in 2023. He left his agency, SM Entertainment, this year. 

Sungmin and Kim Sa-eun have a son named Do-yoon who was born in September last year. 

Sungmin appeared in the Chuseok special episode on Oct. 7 of the Korean TV show “The Return of Superman,” which features fathers spending time with their kids.

During the episode, Sungmin talked about being unable to be active for the past 10 years. 

"I've never even opened my heart to those around me. Since I'm the first idol to get married, I worried a lot about how to tell my fans because I thought they would be surprised, but as rumors and articles started to spread, I couldn't respond,” he said, Korean media reported. 

He added, “As the rumors grew and I saw countless malicious comments, it felt like people were cursing me and looking at me negatively, so I couldn't say anything and just stayed home. I had nothing else to do but be a singer, and I was scared that I would gradually lose my place."

Without any activities in the past 10 years, he expressed regret for his wife becoming the head of the household and supporting the family. 

Kim Sa-eun said, "My husband must have had a harder time than me. I feel sorry and upset because I think I caused him harm.”

"I hope that there will come a day when Do-yoon grows up well and tells me that my performance is cool. Although I've been a singer for 20 years, I'm a rookie trot singer who is just starting out. Please don't hate me too much, but look at me favorably and give me lots of love,” said Sungmin. 

Super Junior held their “Super Show 10” concert in Manila last Oct. 4 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
