The provincial government of Cagayan is investigating the collapse of the Piggatan Bridge in Alcala, Cagayan on Monday afternoon, Oct. 6.
Gov. Edgar Aglipay conducted an inspection of the decades-old structure on Monday night and discussed a comprehensive rerouting plan with Alcala Mayor Tin Antonio, DPWH-Region 2 Assistant Regional Director Rona Ubinia, District Engineer Oscar Gumiran, and Cagayan provincial police chief Police Col. Mardito Anguluan.
Authorities are investigating if the collapse was the result of four overloaded trucks simultaneously passing over the bridge.
They were reportedly loaded with agricultural products.
The DPWH-Cagayan 1st Engineering District vowed to fast-track bridge repair and coordinate with the provincial and local governments for mitigating measures.
Antonio said the bridge is 45-years-old. It is the oldest in the town and has an 18-ton load limit.
