AI: The next economic growth engine

Since 2022, artificial intelligence (AI) has begun to transform the Philippine economy—not as a futuristic concept, but as a current and measurable force. Generative AI tools are already reshaping the business landscape, from finance and marketing to logistics and customer service.
Local conglomerates are integrating AI-driven analytics to refine their operations, while startups are harnessing machine learning to power fintech, e-commerce, and creative industries. According to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the AI economy could contribute ₱500 billion to our GDP by 2030 if adoption accelerates.
With its tech-savvy and English-proficient workforce, the Philippines is being positioned as an AI services hub for the Asia Pacific region. BPO firms are evolving into knowledge process outsourcing centers, using generative AI to enhance productivity while retraining employees for higher-value tasks. Aside from the DTI, other government agencies such as the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) are collaborating with the private sector to establish an AI roadmap focusing on ethics, education, and data governance.
Members of FINEX (Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines) were recently given a tour of the STT Makati Data Center that has one of the most advanced digital infrastructures in the country. Singapore-based ST Telemedia operates the facility, which showcases how next-generation data centers are becoming the backbone and smart nerve centers of our AI-powered digital economy.
STT Makati is designed with AI-driven monitoring and predictive maintenance systems that optimize energy use, regulate temperature, and ensure uninterrupted uptime. Generative AI tools assist in simulating network loads and modeling capacity requirements, while the more sophisticated agentic AI applications autonomously adjust power distribution and cooling systems in real time—reducing operating costs and carbon footprint.
The data center also features machine learning-enhanced cybersecurity, enabling faster anomaly detection and automated incident response. This is crucial as AI adoption drives massive data growth across telecommunications, finance, and digital services. STT Makati’s scalable infrastructure and sustainability initiatives exemplify how advanced data facilities support innovation, economic growth, and long-term competitiveness in the digital age.
ASEAN Innovation Business Platform (AIBP), Southeast Asia’s longest-running B2B technology conference, hosted the AIBP Philippines Summit 2025 last month at the City of Dreams Manila. The summit was supported by the FinTech Alliance Philippines, DICT, and DOST.
One of the summit presenters was Taiwan-based Synology Inc., a global leader in data management and network-attached storage solutions. Claire Huang, Synology’s Country Manager for the Philippines, underscored the growing importance of data protection in today’s fast-changing digital landscape. With AI adoption accelerating in many sectors, Huang made the case that the Philippine market must not simply scale up data capacity—but do so under frameworks of cybersecurity, regulatory compliance, and business continuity.
Emphasis was placed on systems that unify storage, backup, and data management. The idea is to reduce complexity for IT teams by bringing multiple functions under a single infrastructure and integrated ecosystem. As AI accelerates digital transformation across industries, Philippine businesses are faced with increasing challenges in safeguarding sensitive information and ensuring compliance.
Citing Synology’s 2024 Philippine Threat Landscape Report, Huang revealed that evolving cyber threats and scam activities have primarily targeted the financial services, telecommunications, education, and government sectors—prompting the urgency to implement effective technical measures and explore technological solutions. Glaring incidents include the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ estimated figure of $5.82 billion lost by supervised financial institutions due to cyber incidents last year, and the loss of 750 gigabytes of sensitive information from a cyber-attack on the Philippine Health Insurance Corp.
Synology projects the market for AI in the Philippines to reach $3.5 billion by 2030. Thus, organizations must face the dual challenge of enabling innovation while meeting global standards for data privacy and cybersecurity. By engaging with industry leaders at the AIBP Summit, Synology reinforced its commitment to supporting Filipino business enterprises with future-ready data protection solutions in the AI era.
Looking ahead, the rise of agentic AI will streamline resource use, minimize waste, and generate insights previously impossible with human bandwidth and generative AI. The challenge lies in ensuring that its benefits reach beyond Metro Manila’s innovation corridors to uplift regional economies.
If the Philippines can combine digital transformation with good governance, inclusive training, and infrastructure readiness, the country could ride the next wave of the technological revolution enabled by intelligence—both human and artificial.
