Aftershocks from 6.9-magnitude quake exceed 8,000 nearly a week after tremor
PHIVOLCS
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded thousands of aftershocks nearly a week after a powerful earthquake jolted Cebu.
As of 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7, Phivolcs said it has detected 8,298 aftershocks, of which 1,556 were “plotted,” meaning their epicenters were identified using data from at least three seismic stations.
Only 34 tremors were felt, with the strongest measuring magnitude 5.1.
Phivolcs explained that the series of aftershocks is expected to persist for weeks or months as the Earth’s crust adjusts to the movement caused by the main tremor on Sept. 30.
However, it pointed out that the number of daily aftershocks has been decreasing, indicating that seismic activity in the area is gradually easing.
