Lino Cayetano backs brother on call for resignation, snap election: No Cayetano should run in 2028
Former Taguig mayor Lino Cayetano is supporting the call of his brother, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, for elected officials to resign and for the holding of a snap election but said it should start at the local level in the city.
“I support this proposal. I agree with my brother Alan and ask that we start with ourselves,” said Lino Cayetano, who ran and lost in the congressional race in the May elections.
In a Facebook post on Oct. 5, Sen. Cayetano said, “People have lost trust in government and government officials. Honestly, who can blame them? So here’s a thought: WHAT IF we all just resign and allow a Snap Election. From The President, Vice President, Senate, and Congress. With One Important Addition - No Incumbent From The Above Can Run For 1 Election Cycle. National Government Has Its Bureaucracy And Will Continue To Run.”
Lino Cayetano wrote on Facebook that the Cayetanos should “give up power.”
“And this movement for real transformation will be a legacy our Father will be truly proud of,” he said, referring to the late senator Renato Cayetano.
He said the Senate and the Taguig City government can function without the Cayetanos.
“Lets lead. The Senate will function without the Cayetanos while Taguig has a very capable Vice Mayor and the Cayetano political party has had 15 years to run Taguig City and institute reform. Matibay na dapat ito. If you truly believe what you say then trust and have faith that if some of the old guard step down now - it will inspire others to follow,” said Lino Cayetano, who is also a TV director.
Lani Cayetano, the wife of Alan Peter, is the current mayor of Taguig.
Lino Cayetano added, “I will support further that no Cayetano should run in 2028. Lahat tayo. Hindi naman siguro ito gimmick konektado sa plano at gulo sa Senado kundi sinserong ideya para masagot and hiling at galit ng tao (All of us. This may not be a gimmick connected to the plan and chaos in the Senate but a sincere idea to answer the people's requests and anger).”
“Your proposal will show the entire world that this generation of Filipino leaders are willing to sacrifice and step aside for the next Generation and we are ready to help them lead - NOW. No need for to wait for them to take it. Lets give it to them! The next generation is ready to lead. Be the spark!” he said.
He said, “Maybe this is the best propsal yet. Let go of power - then people will believe. For the Status Quo to step down may be the only way to give our country a chance - baka ito lang pag asa natin sa tunay na pagbabago (maybe this is our only hope for real change).”
“If the politicians are stuck and can't think of anything but compromise and camouflage then let's endorse this proposal. With the President's support and as caretaker of the idea it can work - but it starts with one. Be that one Sen. Alan and you will be remembered by all sides as someone who laid the groundwork for real change. Our people are tired and angry, and the Filipino, contrary to what some believe - are honest, hard working, frustrated and hungry for Change,” said Lino Cayetano.
