Instituto Cervantes' Pelicula>Pelikula Spanish film festival returns to Makati

The much-anticipated PELÍCULA>PELIKULA Spanish Film Festival is set to return to Makati from Oct. 10 to 16, 2025, celebrating its 24th edition at the Ayala Triangle Gardens and Power Plant Mall. Since its inception in 2002 by Instituto Cervantes, PELÍCULA has become a beloved annual cinematic event in the Philippines, showcasing the richness and diversity of Spanish-language cinema.
This year’s festival will feature over 20 acclaimed films from Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines. The opening night on Oct. 10 at Ayala Triangle Gardens will present “El 47” (Marcel Barrena, 2024).
Throughout the week, audiences can enjoy a wide range of genres: dramas: “Soy Nevenka” (Icíar Bollaín, 2024), “Nosotros” (Helena Taberna, 2024), documentaries: “Un hombre libre” (Laura Hojman, 2024), “La guitarra flamenca de Yerai Cortés” (C. Tangana, 2024), and animations: “Mariposas negras” (David Baute, 2024), and “Robotia” (Diego Cagide & Diego Lucero, 2024).
Latin American cinema will be represented by: “Por tu bien” (Argentina, Axel Monsú, 2024), “Até que a música pare” (Brazil, Cristiane Oliveira, 2023), “Becho” (Uruguay, José Infantozzi, 2024), and “Reinas” (Peru, Klaudia Reynicke, 2024). Filipino cinema will shine through the program “En corto”, a selection of short films from the Philippines, Latin America, and Spain, to be screened on Oct. 16.
Continuing a cherished tradition since 2004, festival goers will vote for their favorite films after each screening. The winning title will be announced on Oct. 16 and re-screened that evening at the Power Plant Cinema 6 during the closing ceremony.
On Oct. 11, Ayala Triangle Gardens will host Cine Maratón, a full-day film extravaganza from 11:45 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., featuring “Dalia y el libro rojo” (David Bisbano, 2024), “Tasio” (Montxo Armendáriz, 1984), “Solos en la noche” (Guillermo Rojas, 2024), and “Reinas” (Klaudia Reynicke, 2024).
On Oct. 16, Encuentros en el cine: En corto will highlight three recent Filipino short films: “Lip Sync Assassin” (Jon Galvez, 2025), “Animal Lovers” (Aedrian Araojo, 2023), and “Radikals” (Arvin Belarmino, 2024).
Each film will be presented by its director, offering audiences a unique opportunity to engage with local talent.
Instituto Cervantes will host a special children’s activity on Oct. 11, featuring crafts and games designed to spark creativity and imagination.
On Oct. 12, before the 2:00 p.m. screening of “Robotia” at Power Plant Cinema 6, children will have a chance to win footballs and an official Real Madrid jersey signed by football legend Emilio Butragueño—courtesy of Real Madrid C.F. and Peña Madridista Emilio Butragueño Manila.
All screenings are free of charge. Films will be shown in their original language with English subtitles.
