Ilocos Norte town on alert following magnitude-five earthquake
LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – Currimao, Ilocos Norte Mayor Edward “Boyet” Quilala has directed the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) to monitor coastal areas in the municipality to ensure the safety of residents and assess any possible damage following the magnitude-five earthquake Sunday.
Quilala reminded the people to stay alert and calm and remain vigilant for possible aftershocks.
"To raise awareness and strengthen preparedness, we are sharing the Tsunami Hazard Map of Currimao obtained from Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, which shows the worst-case scenario of possible inundation areas in the event of a strong earthquake or tsunami,” Quilala said.
Possible affected barangays are Paguludan, Maglaoi Sur, Maglaoi Centro, Maglaoi Norte, Pias Sur, Pias Norte, Gaang, Victoria, Salugan, Torre, Lioes, Poblacion 1, Poblacion 2, Pangil, San Simeon, Bimmanga, Tapao-Tigue, and Cabuusan.
The municipal government urged residents to prepare emergency essentials and be ready to evacuate immediately if a stronger earthquake or official tsunami alert is issued.
