University of Santo Tomas rediscovered its winning form and crushed University of the East, 111-99, to seize solo third in UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila on Saturday, Oct. 4.
After a tightly contested first half that saw the Tigers hold a 59-55 lead, UST came out firing in the third quarter and unleashed a decisive 20-7 blitz capped by an Amiel Acido triple to break away for a 79-62 cushion.
From there, the España-based squad maintained control despite multiple comeback attempts from the Red Warriors in the fourth quarter, securing the win and improving to a 3-1 record just behind league leaders Ateneo and National University.
The win was sort-of a morale booster for the Pido Jarencio-led crew after suffering their first loss last Wednesday at the expense of NU, 76-69.
Collins Akowe, who was held to five points in their last game, bounced back with a double-double effort of 18 points and 17 rebounds on top of two assists and three blocks.
Nic Cabañero and Forthsky Padrigao also stepped up and chipped in 22 and 18 points, respectively, while Acido and Mark Llemit added 11 points each.
Drayton Caoile had his breakthrough game of 23 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals, even as John Abate erupted with 27 points, but their efforts went futile as UE absorbed its fourth loss in as many outings.
On the distaff side, UST flexed its dominance with a commanding 99-42 rout of UE for its third consecutive win in as many games.
The Growling Tigresses opened the game with a blistering 25-5 run, overwhelming the Lady Warriors early and never looking back.
Oma Onianwa led UST with 17 points, six rebounds, two assists, and one block, while Kent Pastrana and Breana Pineda added 13 points each.
Ivy Yañez and Rachel Lacayanga conspired for 22 points in a losing effort for UE.
