The European Union (EU) will provide €800,000 (approximately P54 million) in financial assistance to the victims of the recent typhoons and flood in the country, and expressed solidarity with the Philippines because of the devastation caused by the 6.9-magnitude earthquake in Cebu province this week.

In a statement, the EU said it is going to release €800,000 (approximately P54 million) as humanitarian aid to the victims.
“The funding will help address the most urgent needs of people in the hardest hit areas, including communities that are also affected by conflict,” the statement read, pointing out that the aid is in response “to the series of tropical cyclones that have affected the Philippines in past weeks, intensifying monsoon rains across the country.”
“This allocation will be used to provide emergency relief in areas such as shelter, health, and water and sanitation,” it added.
The EU assured that it is also closely following the humanitarian situation on the ground after the earthquake that struck Cebu last Sept. 30.
“The EU expresses its condolences to the families of the victims and stand ready to provide additional support pending on-going needs assessment,” it said.
The funding, the EU furthered, is on top of the €6.5 million (approximately P441.8 million) already allocated this year for humanitarian aid and disaster preparedness to the Philippines.
The amount includes the €500,000 (approximately P33.98 million) provided in response to a previous series of tropical cyclones that affected the country in July.
The Singapore Red Cross has also earlier announced S$50,000 in aid.
The funding will include urgent medical needs, water sanitation and hygiene, as well as mental health and psychosocial support activities provided by the Philippine Red Cross.
“We stand in solidarity with our sister national society and the impacted communities in these challenging times,” Benjamin William, SRC secretary-general and chief executive officer, said.
As of Thursday night, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), reported a death toll of 73.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), on the other hand, said that some 559 people have been injured because of the earthquake.
On Friday, the NDRRMC stated that a total of 366,360 people or 80,595 families were affected by the earthquake.
