Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga empowered the next generation of communicators to champion media literacy and take a proactive stand against fake news.
In a learning session attended by communication students and faculty of Far Eastern University (FEU) on September 29, 2025, Zaldarriaga, who is an advocate of media literacy, shared insights and practical strategies to help students identify, challenge, and prevent the spread of misinformation and disinformation.
“Your voice matters just as mine matters. Your choices online matter. And together, we can make responsible communication trend again. We all need to collaborate because upholding credibility is everyone’s responsibility,” he emphasized during his talk on Countering Misinformation and Disinformation in Digital Media.
Zaldarriaga joined other PR leaders for “FEUling PRide: Charging Ahead in Public Relations” seminar organized by the FEU Communication Society in partnership with the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP).
Zaldarriaga, who also serves as a PRSP Board of Trustee, underscored the importance of integrating media literacy into education, stressing that it is now an essential life skill.
“Some schools have already taken steps to teach students how to spot fake news. With the right support, more young people—especially in vulnerable communities—can gain access to this critical knowledge,” said Zaldarriaga.
The communications expert also expressed support for FEU’s initiative to empower students by collaborating with industry practitioners to sharpen critical thinking, discern credible information, and foster responsible digital citizenship.
