The red-hot National University seeks to stretch its winning run to four when it battles reigning champion University of the Philippines in the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila Saturday, Oct. 4.
Determined to move forward after their dismal performance last year, the Bulldogs face another stern test as they stake their spotless record on the line against the Fighting Maroons, who were fresh off their first win last Sept. 28.
Game time is scheduled at 4:30 p.m., following the opening men’s action with University of Santo Tomas and University of the East squaring off at 2 p.m.
Despite having the share of lead, head coach Jeff Napa cut the celebration short as they brace for a tight duel with UP, which they expect to pour it all on after its lackluster start in its title defense bid.
“So, we need to prepare right away. We need to shift our focus against UP. So, this is W. Thank you. Bless kami,” said Napa. “Pero, ‘yon nga, we have to move on. We have to move forward right away.”
Starring in their 76-69 stunner against the Tigers, Jake Figueroa and Omar John are looking to duplicate their splendid performances for the Bulldogs as a win could put them atop the standings.
“I just want to win, because I trust them. I have a winner mindset,” said John. “But now, I understand after winning I have to put aside my tantrums, my ego, and just stick to the game plan.”
Figueroa and John, who neutralized UST’s Collins Akowe in their first face-off, stand at the forefront with PJ Palacielo, Tebol Garcia, and Steve Nash Enriquez rendering the support.
On the other hand, UP tries to spoil the fun of the Sampaloc-based squad with Noy Remogat seemingly having his groove again after a 21-point, 11-assist, seven-rebound stat line against his former school UE, 92-75.
Remogat spearheads the State U alongside Gerry Abadiano, Francis Nnoruka, Gani Stevens, and Jacob Bayla as they look to make it back-to-back wins for the Maroons.
Meanwhile, Akowe has his chance to redeem himself after a quiet act against his high school team NU that resulted in their first loss this season.
Facing a winless UE squad won’t be an easy task for the 6-foot-10 Nigerian rookie. After battling NU’s Sean John, he now braces for a paint war against fellow Nigerian Precious Momowei, who is determined to lift the Warriors into the win column.
