The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) on Thursday, October 2, announced that it is mobilizing family tents and emergency supplies for thousands of families displaced by the powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake in Northern Cebu, following a direct call from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The quake, which struck with its epicenter in Bogo City, left more than 2,200 families homeless and in urgent need of shelter.
In response, President Marcos, together with Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon, reached out to PRC Chairman Richard Gordon to immediately assist in providing temporary shelters.
“The President moved quickly and decisively,” Gordon said. “That kind of leadership is what our people need in times of crisis,” he added.
Gordon also emphasized that the President’s call to action enables the PRC and government agencies to “work hand in hand in bringing immediate relief to the victims of this earthquake.”
PRC readies tent city and relief for affected families
Gordon quickly mobilized PRC’s assets from its warehouses in Manila, Cebu, and Subic, including medical and family tents, food packs, water supplies, and emergency equipment.
The PRC said it is now on standby while local government units (LGUs) identify an open area where a tent city can be established for displaced residents.
Once the site is confirmed, the PRC said it will also take charge of camp management, ensuring safety, order, and sanitation in the temporary shelters.
Government agencies coordinate full support
PRC said Dizon, who worked closely with Gordon during the pandemic response, noted the effectiveness of PRC tents previously used as COVID-19 emergency facilities — highlighting their proven reliability as safe shelters.
He added that the DPWH, in close coordination with the Department of National Defense (DND) and Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, will provide logistical support, including C-130 airlifts if needed, to expedite relief distribution.
The PRC also assured the public of a comprehensive disaster response, which includes not only tents but also the deployment of ambulances, blood units, rescue teams, medical staff, portalets, and food distribution operations.
PRC and government: United for rapid disaster response
Gordon reaffirmed PRC’s commitment to working hand in hand with national agencies such as the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), DPWH, and DND to safeguard the welfare of disaster-affected communities.
“We are here to alleviate the suffering of our countrymen,” Gordon said, assuring that the PRC will “move fast and be on the ball” in mobilizing tents as temporary shelters, delivering food and water for sustenance, deploying ambulances and blood units for lifesaving response, and sending in fully equipped rescue and medical teams, as well as portalets.
“PRC is an auxiliary to the government,” Gordon added. “We stand ready to work with DOH, DSWD, DPWH, DND, and all agencies to ensure the welfare of our people.”
As Cebu continues to recover from the earthquake’s devastation, the PRC said the joint efforts of the government and humanitarian groups highlight the importance of swift action and strong collaboration in saving lives and restoring dignity to affected families.
