The city governments of Muntinlupa and Taguig announced assistance to Cebu, which was hit by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake at 9:59 p.m. on Sept. 30.
Cebu Gov. Pam Baricuatro posted on Facebook that as of 10 p.m. on Oct. 1, 72 deaths and 200 persons injured were recorded.
Of the 72, 31 deaths were recorded in Bogo City, 24 in San Remigio, 10 in Medellin, five in Tabogon. and one each in Sogod and Tabuelan.
Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon said the city government will send financial assistance to those affected by the earthquake.
A Muntinlupa team that includes K-9 units will be deployed to Cebu to help in search and rescue operations.
“Let's all offer a prayer for the people in Cebu. I encourage everyone na manalangin para sa mabilis na pagbangon ng mga pamilya at komunidad, pati na rin ng mga apektadong karatig-probinsya (I encourage everyone to pray for the speedy recovery of families and communities, as well as the affected neighboring provinces),” Biazon posted on Facebook.
The Taguig City government dispatched a search and rescue team to Cebu to assist affected communities.
Mayor Lani Cayetano requested the Taguig City Council to approve a measure providing assistance to Cebu and Masbate, which was hit by typhoon “Opong.”
“Sa panahon ng kalamidad, hindi lamang Taguig ang ating obligasyon. Makatao din ang pagdamay sa mga kababayan mula sa ibang lungsod na nangangailangan ng ating malasakit (In times of calamity, our obligation is not only to Taguig. It is also humane to sympathize with our compatriots from other cities who need our care),” Cayetano wrote on Facebook.
In a report, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said, “The earthquake has an epicenter located 19 kilometers northeast offshore of Bogo City and estimated depth of 5 kilometers. As of 8:00 AM PST on 1 October 2025, the DOST-PHIVOLCS Philippine Seismic Network (PSN) has recorded a total of 722 aftershocks ranging from M1.4 to M4.8.”
PHIVOLCS added, “At least eight significant earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from M5.0 to M7.2 affected Cebu and nearby provinces between 1885 and 2013 based on historical records and DOST-PHIVOLCS Earthquake Catalog. The recent damaging earthquakes were the MS6.9 event in Negros Oriental on 6 February 2012, and the MS7.2 event in Bohol on 15 October 2013. In both earthquakes, several buildings and infrastructure were damaged in Cebu Province.”
