Metro cities send aid, rescue teams to quake-hit Cebu

At least four local governments in the National Capital Region (NCR) have deployed emergency contingents and aid to earthquake-hit Cebu province.
Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso ordered the immediate deployment of medical aid and staff to the province of Cebu that was struck by a powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake on Sept. 30.
Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto on Wednesday, Oct. 1, said that the local government will extend support to Cebu following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that devastated several towns in the province.
The city governments of Muntinlupa and Taguig announced assistance to Cebu.
City of Manila
Domagoso called for an emergency meeting with city government officials, including Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MCDRRMO) Director Arnel Eustacio Angeles, Acting City Treasurer Atty. Paul Vega, Manila Health Department OIC Dr. Grace Padilla, Bureau of Permits Director Levi Facundo, City Budget Officer Jorjette B. Aquino, and Chief of Staff Cesar Chavez, to tackle the medical response the city will deliver to the people of Cebu and nearby towns severely affected by the earthquake.
The team will also provide support in the search and rescue operations being conducted by the authorities.
According to the MCDRRMO, the contingent of doctors, nurses, MCDRRMO personnel, along with medical supplies courtesy of the city government, safely arrived at Mactan-Cebu International Airport on Thursday, Oct. 2.
Domagoso also expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased victims of the earthquake.
“Nakikiramay po tayo sa mga pamilyang nandoon. Nandito ang inyong pamahalaang lungsod ng Maynila upang tumulong (I am extending our condolences to all the families who lost their loved ones there in Cebu. The city government of Manila is here to help you)," the mayor said.
Pasig City
Sotto said the local government will mobilize five teams to help in areas heavily affected by the earthquake, including a search and rescue team, a Mass Disaster Management (MDM) team, medical teams for immediate health response, a psychosocial first aid team, and infrastructure audit teams to assess structural safety.
He also said the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMC) will convene on Thursday, Oct. 2, to approve financial assistance for LGUs that are under a state of calamity.
On Wednesday, President Marcos had already ordered the full mobilization of government agencies to assist communities affected by the disaster.
Muntinlupa, Taguig
Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon said the city government will send financial assistance to those affected by the earthquake.

A Muntinlupa team that includes K-9 units will be deployed to Cebu to help in search and rescue operations.
“Let's all offer a prayer for the people in Cebu. I encourage everyone na manalangin para sa mabilis na pagbangon ng mga pamilya at komunidad, pati na rin ng mga apektadong karatig-probinsya (I encourage everyone to pray for the speedy recovery of families and communities, as well as the affected neighboring provinces),” Biazon posted on Facebook.
The Taguig City government dispatched a search and rescue team to Cebu to assist affected communities.
Mayor Lani Cayetano requested the Taguig City Council to approve a measure providing assistance to Cebu and Masbate, which was hit by typhoon “Opong.”
“Sa panahon ng kalamidad, hindi lamang Taguig ang ating obligasyon. Makatao din ang pagdamay sa mga kababayan mula sa ibang lungsod na nangangailangan ng ating malasakit (In times of calamity, our obligation is not only to Taguig. It is also humane to sympathize with our compatriots from other cities who need our care),” Cayetano wrote on Facebook.
