Cops lauded for quick quake response, more policemen sent to Cebu
Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. acting chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), commended policemen in Cebu and nearby provinces for their quick response following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that rocked Central Visayas on Tuesday evening, Sept. 30.
More than 1,300 policemen were already tapped to assist in disaster response in Cebu and more policemen are being deployed to clear roads, assist in relief operations and even in search and rescue.
But immediately after the quake on Tuesday night, Nartatez said policemen in Cebu province were already mobilized for assistance.
He cited a case wherein personnel of the Bogo City Police immediately assisted in evacuating patients, medical staff, and visitors at the Cebu Provincial Hospital.
The swift response of local police, he said, helped ensure the safety of dozens of individuals as tremors damaged sections of the facility and threatened patient care.
Amid aftershocks, power outages, and extensive damage, Nartatez said the local police did not hesitate to evacuate patients and hospital staff to safer grounds.
They also ensured security within the premises of the hospital to avoid panic, supported health workers in securing medical equipment, and set up evacuation tents for those severely affected, according to Nartatez.
He said police forces of other police stations also provided various forms of assistance to help ensure the safety of civilians.
Several teams of disaster response teams from the Police Regional 8 and the Negros Island Region were immediately deployed in northern Cebu province for calamity response.
Nartatez said teams composed of 64 policemen from the regional PNP Maritime Units of Region 6, 7, 8 and Negros Island Region; and, Special Operations Unit were also quickly mobilized and sent to Bogo City, Bantayan Island and San Remigio together with five high-speed tactical water crafts.
“The quick actions of our personnel in Central Visayas and the nearby regions demonstrated the PNP’s commitment to protecting lives, not only by maintaining peace and order but also by taking direct action in emergency situations,” said Nartatez.
“Our police officers are not just enforcers of the law, they are first responders who act with urgency and compassion in times of crisis,” he added.
Nartatez also directed all police units to intensify security in evacuation centers, schools, government facilities, and other critical infrastructure.
Police units are also securing the safe transport and distribution of relief goods to prevent disorder and ensure aid reaches affected families.
