The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) has mobilized immediate relief operations to assist communities devastated by the powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Cebu and nearby provinces earlier this week.
Acting on the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., PCSO General Manager Mel Robles instructed branch offices and Authorized Agent Corporations (AACs) to deliver essential aid swiftly to affected residents.
“Our thoughts are with our kababayans in Cebu and the surrounding areas,” Robles said in a statement.
He added that PCSO is closely monitoring the situation and will extend further assistance to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected.
“We are working tirelessly to bring comfort during these challenging times,” Robles added.
PCSO said among the first to respond were AACs Piona Trading and Supply Corp. and King Dragon Gaming and Amusement Corporation, which turned over food packs and other essentials to the Cebu Provincial Government on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
More AAC donations are en route, with additional support expected from partner organizations in the coming days, PCSO said.
To bolster the relief mission, PCSO noted that Charitimba food packs were distributed as part of the initial aid.
Evacuation kits containing mosquito nets, blankets, plastic mats, slippers, flashlights, pillows, and towels were also airlifted via C-130 aircraft on Wednesday afternoon to support survivors sheltering in evacuation centers, the agency added.
PCSO assured that its assistance goes beyond medical support, aiming to deliver holistic and comprehensive relief to disaster-stricken communities.
Robles also pledged continued coordination with local authorities and national agencies for rehabilitation efforts in the aftermath of the quake.
The 6.9-magnitude earthquake on September 30 —one of the strongest to hit Cebu in recent years—caused widespread destruction to homes, infrastructure, and schools.
Authorities are continuing search, rescue, and recovery operations as aftershocks are expected. According to the Office of Civil Defense, the quake left 63 people dead and over 150 injured.
