BACOLOD CITY – The city government will extend financial assistance to the victims of the magnitude-6.9 earthquake that severely impacted northern Cebu province on Tuesday night, Sept. 30.
Mayor Greg Gasataya, in a media interview, said that he will meet the City Council to discuss the amount of assistance and check available funds with the City Budget Office.
Gasataya said this will be directly coursed through the local government unit (LGU) and beneficiaries will be in areas greatly affected by the tremor.
He said that the city will also launch a donation drive to support the victims.
The mayor said that they are willing to facilitate non-government organizations (NGOs) and other groups who would want to extend help to earthquake victims through the city government.
During the official kickoff of the 46th MassKara Festival in this highly-urbanized city on Wednesday, Oct. 1, Gasataya urged people to pray for earthquake victims.
“Let’s take a moment of silence to offer our prayers to the victims of the recent earthquake in Cebu. The city has decided to send financial aid to our brothers and sisters in Cebu," he said.
The tremor was also felt in Negros Island and this city Intensity V but no significant damages were reported.
