PNP mobilizes personnel, resources to assist in Cebu quake response

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has started mobilizing personnel and resources to maximize the assistance to all the affected residents after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake jolted the province of Cebu, its top official said on Monday, Oct. 1.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, Jr. said he already directed all the personnel in Central Visayas to coordinate with local government units (LGUs), in providing assistance to secure establishments and vital infrastructure that may have been compromised as a result of the strong earthquake to ensure public safety.
“Our personnel on the ground were among the first responders and we assure the people of Cebu that we will extend all the necessary assistance— from securing affected establishments to attending to the needs of the local residents,” said Nartatez.
Aside from the province of Cebu, he said policemen in other affected provinces were also instructed to coordinate with the LGUs for any response.
The earthquake happened on Tuesday night and there were reports of casualties in some areas. The tremor also damaged heritage churches and other structures and affected the power supply in Cebu.
Local authorities have been coordinating with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology for all the necessary information relating to the quake, especially for possible aftershocks.
“We are closely monitoring the development on the ground to maximize police assistance in areas where additional manpower, and your PNP is needed,” said Nartatez.
Structural integrity check
Nartatez said PNP’s Engineering Service was also placed on standby to assist other government agencies in inspecting establishments and critical infrastructure.
“Our Engineering Service will be on standby for possible rendering of technical assistance in the structural integrity inspection of buildings and establishments,” said Nartatez.
Police stations and establishments, he said, will be inspected as part of the efforts to ensure the safety of PNP personnel in Cebu.
He said police forces in the entire province of Cebu were also ordered to keep all their communication lines open for any request for assistance.
