CEBU CITY – Officials here have sought assistance from the national government as Gov. Pamela Baricuatro led mayors in assessing the damage caused by the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the northern city of Bogo Tuesday evening.
Eighteen confirmed deaths were reported in Bogo City and San Remigio.
“I am already in touch with national agencies and the Office of the President kay nangayo ta (we are asking) for reinforcement,” Baricuatro said on Wednesday.
She added that the Provincial Risk Reduction and Management Office is conducting an assessment to determine the extent of the damage.
The Cebu Provincial Information Office confirmed reports that nine adults and four minors died in Bogo City.
Bogo City Mayor Mayel Martinez said the Incident Command System has been established to facilitate rescue operations and risk assessment.
Five deaths were also confirmed in San Remigio, according to the town’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
Three of the fatalities were personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard, while one was a member of the Bureau of Fire Protection.
Baricuatro urged mayors to be proactive in assisting their constituents and to communicate their needs to the Emergency Operations Center at the provincial capitol.
Church collapsed
Mayor Gilbert Arrabis Jr. reported that many structures in Daanbantayan, a town adjacent to Bogo City, were damaged by the earthquake.
He said the Archdiocesan Shrine of Sta. Rosa de Lima in Barangay Poblacion had collapsed, while several bridges require assessment to ensure motorists’ safety.
Many netizens shared on Facebook a video showing the church’s structure collapsing as the earthquake struck northern Cebu.
The Archdiocese of Cebu posted a prayer for protection on its official social media page following the quake:
“We offer special intentions for the churches in northern Cebu that have been destroyed. These sacred spaces have long been places of prayer, hope, and refuge. May they rise again as signs of Your enduring presence among us. Inspire the generosity of hearts and hands to help rebuild what was lost.”
Arrabis said he ordered the closure of two bridges — one near the Daanbantayan public market and another in Suba — due to major damage.
In Lapu-Lapu City, Mayor Cynthia Chan lifted the temporary ban on all types of vehicles at the first Cebu-Mactan Bridge at 10 p.m. Tuesday, following the earthquake.
However, Chan said only light vehicles are currently allowed to pass while an assessment is ongoing to determine the bridge’s structural integrity.
She also ordered inspections of the Lapu-Lapu City Hospital and City Hall.
The Office of the Building Official has been directed to assess all buildings in the city, she added. (PNA)
