MJ Manguiat displayed iron will and drained a game-winning triple to lead Far Eastern University past De La Salle University, 73-72, for its first win in the UAAP Season 88 women’s basketball tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion Wednesday, Oct. 1.
After hitting a clutch trey that leveled the match at 70-all in the payoff period, Manguiat took charge again and delivered the winning trey that proved to be the dagger to the hearts of the La Sallians who came close to stealing the match.
Manguiat registered 16 points, two rebounds, and two assists for FEU which improved to a 1-1 win-loss record.
La Salle, meanwhile, fell to an 0-2 hole which the Green Archers could have avoided if not for Xyla Lubrico's missed free throws after Jimoh Nosifat put themselves ahead, 72-70.
“Inisip ko lang din yung sakit na naramdaman namin last year [and] nandoon na kami ‘eh, may chance na kami last year, pero dahil nga hindi namin nakuha, this year babawi kami,” said Manguiat, a fourth-year guard out of FEU High School.
“Relieved because the last play na naka-convert ang La Salle and lumamang sila ng two points was because of [Manguiat] gambling on defense,” FEU head coach Raiza Palmera-Dy added. "Medyo male-lessen yung galit ko sa kanya sa dugout but in any way, thankful kami na nakuha namin yung first win namin today.”
Lubrico topscored for the Lady Archers with 16 points, while Kyla Go was two rebounds shy of a double-double after listing 10 points and eight rebounds.
Meanwhile, National University-Nazareth School bared its fangs and mauled University of Santo Tomas, 85-63, to take a share of a 3-0 lead with Adamson in the junior high school division.
The Bullpups shifted to a higher gear in the second frame where they posted a 22-4 blitz to seize a 49-24 breakaway heading into the break which they preserved despite several attempts from the Tiger Cubs.
Dean Tria starred for NU with 17 points, while David Sabareza and Nick Pena added 13 and points, respectively. On the other hand, Dats Datu scored 16 in a losing cause for UST.
