DULCE, WAGING WAGI!!! A triumphant tribute to OPM and a timeless voice
Dulce
At the Globe Auditorium of the Maybank Performing Arts Theater last Sept. 27, Asia’s Timeless Diva Dulce celebrated her life and her extraordinary artistry in 'Waging Wagi' — a concert that transcended entertainment and became a moving tribute to Original Pilipino Music, her Visayan roots, and her timeless journey.
With the masterful guidance of Musical Director Homer Flores, the flawless writing of Noel Ferrer, and the seamless flow crafted by Concert Director Rowell Santiago, the evening blossomed into a musical tapestry—woven with memory, heritage, and the inimitable voice of Dulce.
The concert opened with an instrumental prelude and Dulce’s voice floating like a prayer, leading into the nostalgic strains of 'Maala-ala Mo Kaya'. From the very first note, the audience was transported into a world of sincerity and grandeur.
Then came 'Sa Ating Musika', her triumphant call to honor and celebrate Filipino music. “Welcome to my birthday concert, my dream concert,” she declared, drawing thunderous applause. What followed was an intimate journey through her life’s soundtrack, from her Visayan roots with heartfelt renditions of 'Usahay' and 'Matud Nila', to her iconic movie themes that defined eras of Philippine cinema.
Her storytelling between numbers was just as powerful as her singing. She recalled her early days singing for films, moving into Dulce Amor, Ina' (1978), 'Kung Mahawi Man ang Ulap' (1984), and the soaring 'Kaya Kong Abutin ang Langit'—which she recounted recording with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra under the watchful eyes of FPJ himself. These anecdotes were not just entertaining—they revealed the depth of her life woven inseparably with music.
The show glowed brighter as The Nightingale Lani Misalucha and Queen of Soul Jaya joined Dulce for a powerful and soulful 'Paano'. The blending of their voices—three divas in one breathtaking jamming—was a rare moment of OPM royalty.
Dulce and Martin Nievera
The audience erupted when Martin Nievera was persuaded to take the stage and sing. He did an impromptu version of TJ Monterde's hit song 'Palagi' alongside Jex de Castro (Tawag ng Tanghalan), creating a spontaneous and magical duet. Martin, visibly moved, declared to Dulce, “You are the bar.”
The night also featured heartfelt collaborations. Rey Valera performed with Dulce, reminding everyone of OPM’s golden age, and Reuben Laurente brought elegance and warmth to the stage with a duet that displayed not only vocal harmony but deep artistic respect.
The roster of distinguished guests in attendance—including Martin, Jaya, Rey Valera, Donita Rose, Mel Tiangco, Franco, and Ayen Laurel—was a testament to the love and admiration Dulce commands in the industry.
Dulce and Lani Misalucha
The concert was more than a showcase of greatest hits; it was a story of resilience and artistry. Each segment reflected Dulce’s life stages, from her beginnings to her struggles and triumphs. Her soaring highs remained crystal clear, while her tender lows carried an emotional weight that hushed the auditorium into reverent silence.
The arrangements by Flores were exquisite—classic yet refreshed—and Santiago’s direction ensured every moment was both polished and heartfelt. It was not a spectacle for its own sake, but a celebration of truth and authenticity.
As the final notes rang out, the entire auditorium rose in thunderous applause, unwilling to let the night end. The standing ovation was not just for a performance—it was for a life, a legacy, and a voice that has shaped generations.
