Classes suspended in Negros Occidental following 6.9-quake in Cebu
BACOLOD CITY - Classes in some schools in this highly-urbanized city and local government units in Negros Occidental were suspended on Wednesday, Oct. 1, following the 6.9-magnitude tremor that hit Bogo City, Cebu, and also affected the province on Tuesday night, Sept. 30.
In a Facebook post, E.B. Magalona Mayor Matthew Louis Malacon announced the class suspension to due to the strong quake.
Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva also ordered the suspension of all classes on all levels in Sagay City for safety.
The suspension will allow for an emergency structural assessment of both campus and government buildings, he said.
Classes will resume on Thursday, Oct. 2, pending the official results of the assessment.
Some private schools and universities here also suspended their face-to-face classes.
The University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) is also closing its campus on Oct. 1 for inspection to ensure the safety of people.
In the interest of safety, and following the recent earthquake here and nearby localities, classes in the Higher Education Unit at the University of St. La Salle (USLS) will shift to online synchronous modality with option to hold asynchronous learning in areas with power disruptions.
As a precautionary measure, safety checks will be also conducted on campus.
Upon the recommendation of the school's General Services Office, the Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod (CSA-B) is temporarily suspending on-site classes and office operations to allow for the rapid safety inspection of all campus structures and utilities.
As of 11 p.m., the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) reported the tremors felt in some areas in the province.
Intensity VI in Murcia and Manapla; Intensity V in Bacolod City, San Carlos City, Toboso, Moises Padilla, Hinigaran, Calatrava, Himamaylan City, and Talisay City; Intensity IV in Cadiz City, Bago City, Ilog, Kabankalan City, La Castellana, Cauayan, Pontevedra, and some portion of Binalbagan; and Intensity I in Sipalay City, and Hinobaan.
Meanwhile, a power interruption also occurred during the earthquake.
