The powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck northern Cebu on Tuesday night, Sept. 30, claimed the lives of three Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel.
PCG Commandant Adm. Ronnie Gil Gavan identified the fallen coastguardians as Seaman Second Class Lawrence Palomo, assigned at the Maritime Safety Services; and Apprentice Seamen (ASN) Jujay Mahusay and Ert Cart Dacunes, from the PCG Training Center-Masbate.
In an interview on Wednesday, Oct. 1, Gavan said the three coastguardians died when the sports gymnasium of San Remigio town in Cebu collapsed due to the quake while a basketball match was being held.
Gavan said the coastguardians were rushed to Bogo General Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
“Despite the efforts of attending physicians, they were all pronounced dead,” he said.
The PCG chief extended condolences to the families of the fallen personnel.
“Their dedication to the service and camaraderie with our fellow uniformed men and women will always be remembered. The PCG stands in full solidarity with their loved ones and will ensure that they receive the utmost support,” Gavan said.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said at least 69 people have already been killed by the quake, which struck at 9:59 p.m. Tuesday. Extensive damage was expected in Cebu.
