Heavy rains to persist in Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas — PAGASA

Published Jan 9, 2025 03:54 am

Most of Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas have seen heavy rains in the last 24 hours, and weather specialists at the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecast that these conditions will last for the next three days.

In its 11 a.m. weather advisory on Thursday, Jan. 9, PAGASA said heavy to intense rainfall (100 to 200 millimeters) may affect Northern and Eastern Samar until Friday noon, Jan. 10.

During this period, moderate to heavy rainfall (50 to 100 millimeters) may also affect Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Oriental Mindoro, Masbate, Romblon, Aklan, Capiz, Samar, Biliran, and Leyte.

From Friday noon to Saturday noon, Jan. 11, heavy to intense precipitation is expected to prevail over Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, and Northern Samar.

Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rainfall will persist in Camarines Norte, Masbate, Romblon, Aklan, Capiz, Eastern Samar, Samar, and Biliran.

From Saturday noon to Sunday noon, Jan. 12, heavy to intense rainfall is expected to continue in Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and Albay.

Moderate to heavy rains may also affect Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Marinduque, Masbate, and Sorsogon.

PAGASA warned that under heavy to intense rainfall, numerous flooding events are likely, especially in urbanized, low-lying areas, or those near rivers. Landslides are also likely in areas that are moderately to highly susceptible to these hazards,

Meanwhile, under moderate to heavy precipitation, localized flooding is possible, mainly in urbanized, low-lying areas, or those near rivers. Landslides are also possible in highly susceptible areas.

In the next 24 hours, PAGASA said the northeast monsoon (amihan) may also bring cloudy skies, scattered rains, and isolated thunderstorms across Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Central Luzon.

Flash floods or landslides are possible in these areas due to moderate to heavy rains.

PAGASA said the amihan may have minimal impact on Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, where only partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains are expected.

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA also reminded the public to remain vigilant against flash floods and landslides during severe thunderstorms.
